How to Keep Swine Flu out of Your Home

What is the swine flu? – The swine flu is a type of influenza virus, which is usually found in pigs. The current strand of the virus causing concern is a new variation of the virus. While swine flu does not normally pass to humans, such transmission can occur. The current strand of the virus is more concerning to health experts than in the past, because this new virus has shown the ability to pass from human to human.

What to Do - While the swine flu is disturbing; thus far it is a very limited outbreak. The best thing for you to do to keep the swine flu away from your home is to practice good old fashioned common sense.
  • Wash Your Hands, and Wash them WELL! – Wash your hands often, with warm, soapy water. Touching your mouth, eyes, and nose gives the virus a better chance to enter your body, so avoid touching these areas in excess, especially if your hands are not clean! When washing your hands, remember the basics from when you were a kid – adequate soap, warm water, and friction. Make sure to scrub vigorously for 20 seconds before rinsing off the soap. Make sure to wash all surfaces of the hand – between and on the tips of fingers, under your fingernails, and on the back of your hands. When you rinse, keep your fingers pointed down to let the grime fall into the sink. Then dry your hands vigorously.
  • Take a Sick Day! – In order to prevent the spread of germs, stay home if you are not feeling well. This will prevent you spreading a possible viral infection. Swine flu symptoms are just the same as regular flu symptoms – high fever, exhaustion, sore throat, vomiting and diarrhea. If you experience all or some of these symptoms, take a sick day, and visit the doctor instead.
While these simple tips may seem like “no-brainers”, they are the best ways to keep the swine flu away from you and your loved ones.
