Simple Solutions for Common Situations

To keep hard boiling egg shells from cracking, first add a pinch of salt to the water.

Burnt food on your skillet? Cover the bottom with water, add a couple drops of dish soap, and bring it to a boil.  Cool and clean.

Ooops.  Spill too much salt into the simmering pan? Drop in a peeled potato to instantly absorb the extra salt.

Before using tweezers to remove a splinter, try Scotch tape first to pull it out.

Use Alka Seltzer to:

  • Remove a stain from the bottom of a glass vase by filling it with water and two tablets
  • Polish jewelry with two tablets dropped in a glass of water for two minutes
  • Clean a Thermos bottle by filling it with water, adding four tablets and soaking for an hour

Clean a red wine stain by pouring white wine on it to neutralize it.  Then sponge it with soapy water.

De-grease and clean a barbecue grill by wire brushing it with a baking soda paste.  Leave it for 15 minutes, and wipe it clean.  Before you cook, let the fire burn off the extra residue.

Neutralize odors with baking soda.

Dusting your lights can increase their illumination by up to 50%.
