Heating

Q: We’re considering adding a humidifier to our heating system. Is this a worthwhile investment?

A: You bet. Especially if you want to save money on your home heating bills while enjoying air that’s easier to breath, and never dry. As the relative humidity increases, you’ll become comfortable at lower temperatures, which conserves energy and saves you money.

Q: I’m pretty sure it’s time for a new heating system. What should I look for when shopping around?

A: If your home heating system is around fifteen years old, chances are it’s time for a replacement. We recommend models with the highest HSPF rating (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor). The higher the rating, the more efficient your system will be. That, in turn, leads to a lower incidence of repair and lower energy bills.

Q: My neighbor swears by pre-season heating tune-ups. Are these really worth the time and the cost?

A: A pre-season tune-up will prep your home heating system for the season to come, and the corresponding cold weather. When the tune-up is provided by Plumbline Services, it includes a multi-point inspection along with a thorough tune-up. That way, problems can be spotted before they occur, which lessens the chance for big repair bills down the road. And our tune-up includes a thorough cleaning and filter replacement. Q. Our kids are grown now, and it costs a fortune to heat whole sections of our home that rarely get used. What can we do to save money on our heating and cooling bills?

A. You have several options available to you, but one of the best and most affordable is to consider dividing your home into multiple “zones.” That way, you can enjoy total indoor comfort in those sections of your home where you spend most of your time. At the same time, you can enjoy real savings by restricting the amount of warm or cool air in the rest of your home.

Q. Once and for all, what’s the difference between a furnace and a boiler?

A: A boiler is a heating unit that heats water for baseboards, radiant heat or steam radiators. A furnace is a heating unit that heats air, and has a blower and duct work to distribute the heat to your living space. That’s it in a nutshell.
