Air Conditioning Q: If I’m shopping for an air conditioning system, how can I tell the relative efficiencies of each model and brand? A: Since most air conditioning systems use electricity to produce cool air, you can check the SEER (Season Energy Efficiency Ratio) rating. This ratio is the amount of cooling produced (BTUs) divided by the amount of electricity (watts). The higher the number, the greater the operating efficiency. Q: We’re interested in having a central air conditioning system installed in our home. I heard adding one to my current heating system is an option, but is this a good idea? |

A: This process is often referred to as a “cooling add-on,” which means an evaporator or cooling coil is added to your furnace, along with an outdoor condenser and a refrigerant line to connect them. The upside: no need to install a separate set of ducts, which saves you money. The downside: If heating ducts are undersized for the amount of cooling your home and your family requires, your system will have to work harder than otherwise necessary. There’s no right or wrong way to approach this decision: at Plumbline, our home comfort specialists are always on hand to advise you. Q: How often do I need to change the filter in my central air conditioning system? A: When your system is in constant use, the filter generally should be changed on a monthly basis. On the other hand, three to five inch pleated filters could last anywhere from six months to a year. And some manufacturers provide filters that are rubber coated and washable. But if you have standard disposable filters, most are inexpensive and can be purchased at a variety of retail and hardware stores. Q: Is it true that my computer can affect my home comfort system? A: Absolutely. Most of the electricity used from computers is converted into heat. Therefore, rooms that hold computers or servers have special cooling requirements. Windows, doors, room size, sun, shade, are among the considerations. There are several possible solutions, among them a portable air conditioner, depending on the needs of your home or office.
