HVAC FAQs

What does BTU mean? This stands for British thermal unit; this is the quantity of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 lb. of water 1 degree F at 39.2 degrees F.

HVACWhat is a Forced Air System? Heating and cooling equipment that runs on Gas or Electric in your home that produces heated or cooled air in a centralized area and then distributes the heated or cooled air throughout your home through the use of a system of ducts that allow the treated air to move through your house and then return to the heating and cooling equipment and the process starts all over again. The temperature of the air is controlled by thermostats.

What is a Damper? There are manual dampers and motorized dampers. A manual damper is made of a sheet metal and shaped to fit inside of a duct with a handle outside the duct to adjust the air flow in a room. Motorized dampers are used in zoned systems and will automatically adjust the amount of conditioned air to rooms or zones.

What are ducts? A system of sheet metal or fiberglass that is usually rectangular in shape that delivers warm or cool air from the furnace or Air Conditioner in your home to different rooms in your house. They work best when they’re insulated to keep the air cool or warm as it moves through the ducts.

What is a Heat exchanger? Heat Exchangers allow furnaces to transfer heat from the process of combustion safely into breathable air. It’s important that no combustion gas gets into the air stream. Primary heat exchangers handle the hottest gas and high-efficiency furnaces use secondary heat exchangers to recover heat that used to be vented up chimneys; venting this heat makes the furnace more efficient.

What is a heat recovery ventilator? Heat recovery ventilators bring fresh air outside the home into the home while forcing used indoor air outside the house. This process allows for energy to be reclaimed that was usually vented outside the home.

What is a Heat Pump? Heat pumps move heat from one place to another in your home using valves to reverse air flow, and heat exchangers to move air from a cold area to a hot area and vice versa and this helps to maintain constant temperatures in your home for the best house energy efficiency.

What are Humidifiers? Humidifiers are a great addition to any HVAC system in Denver because of our dry air, and they maintain the moisture of indoor air in balance.
