• Willis Carrier patents his invention for central air conditioning in 1906, calling it an   Apparatus for Treating Air."
• In 1917, two commercial buildings were the first to incorporate central air: the New   Empire Theatre in Montgomery, Alabama and the Central Park Theater in Chicago.
• A major study in 1950 shows that families living in air conditioned homes sleep longer in   summer, enjoy their food more, and have more leisure time.• With innovations in   refrigeration and air conditioning going hand in hand, frozen TV dinners were first mass   marketed in 1955.

• Central heating systems were used in northern Roman cities in the 100s . Air heated by   furnaces was led through empty spaces under the floors and out of pipes in the walls -   this system being termed a 'hypocaust'.
